Carolina Hurricanes Extend Paul Maurice’s Contract
The Carolina Hurricanes have extended the contracts of head coach Paul Maurice and his staff after the team made it to the Eastern Conference final this season. The club announced on June 15th that it agreed to terms on a three-year deal for Maurice, who took over at mid-season and led the team into the playoffs for the first time since 2006, when the club won the Stanley Cup.
The team also announced that Ron Francis would come back as associate head coach and also become the director of player personnel. Assistant coaches Kevin McCarthy and Tom Rowe were also kept with their existing contracts and Tom Barrasso, who was the goaltending coach and director of goalie development, will become an assistant coach.
The Hurricanes playoff run helped them make a profit for the first time since 2006. The 41-year-old Maurice replaced Peter Laviolette in December. He is the team’s winningest coach and led them to the 2002 Cup finals in his first job with the team. He was fired in December 2003 and replaced by Laviolette, who led the club to the first major professional sports championship in North Carolina history.
