Spain Sets Record With 15th Straight Win

Spain won their record-breaking 15th consecutive game on June 21st with a 2-0 win over host team South Africa in the Confederations Cup Group A game. David Villa and Fernando Llorente scored the goals that sealed the victory and the record that was previously shared by Brazil, Australia, and France. It was also Spain’s 35th game in a row without a defeat, which ties them with Brazil for the record.

Even though they lost, South Africa still made it to the semi-finals of the tournament as the other Group A game between Iraq and New Zealand finished goalless. If Iraq would have won, then South Africa would have been knocked out of the event.

It looked like South Africa were playing for a draw, as they only needed one point, but that backfired as Spain took control of the match. South Africa appeared to have luck on their side as Spain were awarded a penalty early in the second half and goalkeeper Khune made a good on David Villa to his left. He also saved the rebound shot by Fernando Torres.

However, just a few moments later Villa scored to make it 1-0. The came was put out of reach when substitute Llorente scored in the 72nd minute.
