Calgary Flames Hire Brent Sutter As Coach
The Calgary Flames have officially announce Brent Sutter as the team’s new head coach on June 23nd. The Club also named Ryan McGill, Dave Lowry, and Jamie McLennan as his assistant coaches.
“To me, it’s a big day,” said Flames general manager Darryl Sutter, who is Brent’s older brother. To be able to get who I think is the best free agent head coach out there and to be able to add the group together and see how they’re going to work is an awesome thing.”
It had been widely speculated that Brent Sutter would be names the coach after Darryl fired former coach Mike Keenan on May 22nd and Brent Sutter quit as coach of the New Jersey Devils on June 9.
Brent had one year left on his three-deal with new Jersey and indicated he wanted to be located closer to his family in Red Deer, Alberta. “It was for all the right reasons,” Brent Sutter said about his decision to resign. He said New Jersey general manager Lou Lamoriello understood his reasons to leave the club.
The 47-year -old told reporters that the Calgary coaching vacancy had had no impact on his decision to leave New Jersey.
Brent Sutter led the Devils to a 97-56-11 regular-season record while he was head coach, but failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs in his two seasons there. Before joining New Jersey, Sutter spent eight seasons as the owner, president, general manager and coach of the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League, winning the Memorial Cup in 2001. He also led Canada to consecutive gold medals at the world junior championships in 2005 and 2006.
