Chelsea Appeals Suspensions And Fines
On June 29th, Chelsea said they would appeal to UEFA over the suspensions and fines that striker Didier Drogba and right-back Jose Bosingwa received for their actions after the Champions League semi final game against Barcelona at Stamford Bridge in London. Chelsea will appeal the £85,000 fine the club received.
A Chelsea statement was released which partly said: “We have today lodged an appeal against the UEFA bans given to Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa, and the fine imposed against the club. We believe these punishments are unnecessarily harsh given the circumstances.”
On June 17, Drogba was handed a six-game suspension – the last two suspended for two years – for his confrontation with Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo after Chelsea’s 1-1 second-leg draw with Barcelona on May 6. The draw sent Chelsea out of the competition on the away goals rule.
UEFA also handed a four-game suspension- the last game suspended for two years – to right-back Jose Bosingwa.
The Portuguese defender called Ovrebo a “thief” after Barcelona match, and the club was fined £85,000 for the improper conduct of their players and for the throwing of missiles by their fans.
Tempers boiled over when the game ended as Ovrebo turned down several penalty claims by Chelsea. A date for an appeal hearing hasn’t been set yet by UEFA.
