Jay Bouwmeester Signs With Calgary Flames
Impending free agent defenceman Jay Bouwmeester signed with the Calgary Flames on June 30th last night for $33 million over five years.
“I am happy to have this deal done as Calgary was a team I was very interested in playing for,” he said in a statement released by the team. I was encouraged by the commitment Calgary showed by acquiring me prior to July 1. I am familiar with some of the players and believe we have a strong club that is poised to make the next step in becoming a championship club. I look forward to contributing to that success.”
The Flames acquired the rights to the 25-year-old Bouwmeester after they dealt a third-round pick (67th overall) and pending unrestricted free agent Jordan Leopold to the Florida Panthers on June 27th.
Jay is one of the most complete defenceman in the game, and we are very pleased to have reached an agreement that will make him an important component of the Calgary Flames success,” Calagary general manager Darryl Sutter said in a press release.
Bouwmeester, who hails from nearby Edmonton, Alberta scored 15 goals and 27 assists for Florida last season.
