Former NFL’er Bruce Smith Convicted Of Drunk Driving

Former NFL great Bruce Smith was convicted of drunken driving on July 9. The judge in Virginia Beach, Virginia, said that alcohol was the reason Smith failed his on-field sobriety tests, while Smith claimed he failed because of old football injuries.

Smith wouldn’t answer reporters’ questions after his trial in Virginia Beach General District Court. He then appealed the guilty verdict to Virginia Beach Circuit Court, which set a hearing in the case for Aug. 27.

Smith was also convicted of speeding and refusing to take an alcohol breath test. Judge Teresa McCrimmon handed him a 90-day suspended jail term and also fined him $350 for drunken driving. The judge also suspended Smith’s driver’s license for a year for his refusing to take the breath test and fined him $90 for the speeding charge.

Smith’s appeal is to take place less than three weeks after he will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug 7. The 46-year-old Smith ended his 19-year career with the Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins in 2003 as the NFL’s all-time sacks leader. The defensive lineman played in 11 Pro Bowls and was named a first-team All-Pro selection nine times in his career.
