Montreal Canadiens Sign Moen and Mara

The Montreal Canadiens signed two more free agents as they inked forward Travis Moen to a three-year contract and defenceman Paul Mara to a one-year deal on July 10th. The financial details of the contracts were not immediately released.

“Travis Moen is a character player. He is versatile, and he plays hard. His size and style will contribute to adding physicality to our team,” said Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey in a statement.

Moen spent last season with the San Jose Sharks, where he scored seven goals and nine assists for 16 points in 82 games. During his five-year NHL career so far, he has scored 29 goals and 27 assists for 56 points. He was a member of the Stanley Cup-winning Anaheim Ducks in 2007.

Moen, who hails from Swift Current, Saskatchewan was originally drafted by the Calgary Flames in the fifth round (155th overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

Gainey also had praise for his new defenceman from Ridgewood, New Jersey. “Paul Mara will bring size and experience to our group of defensemen. He can contribute to all facets of the game,” said Gainey.

In 76 games with the New York Rangers last season, Mara scored five goals and 16 assists for 21 points. He had 94 minutes in penalties. In 10 NHL seasons, the 29-year old has scored 63 goals and 176 assists for 239 points with Tampa, Phoenix, Boston, and New York.

Mara was originally selected in the first round by the Tampa Bay Lightning, 7th overall at the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
