Major Boxing Tournament Announced

A major boxing tournament was announced at Madison Square Garden in New York City on July 13th as the Showtime television network in America laid out its plans for an unprecedented six-man super middleweight event to crown one universally recognized champion.

The boxing tournament will feature six of the best super middleweights in the world: current WBA title-holder Mikkel Kessler (41-1, 31 KO’s), current WBC title-holder Carl Froch (25-0, 20 KO’s), Arthur Abraham (30-0, 24 KO’s), who relinquished his IBF middleweight title to participate in the tournament, former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KO’s) and a pair of unbeaten former Olympians, Andre Dirrell (18-0, 13 KO’s) and Andre Ward (19-0, 12 KO’s).

There will be three stages of bouts in the event. These are group stage one, the semi-finals and then the finals. Each bout will be scheduled for 12 rounds. Points will be awarded after each fight with boxers earning two points for a win (a one point bonus for a KO or TKO will be given), one point for a draw and no points for a loss.

After the group stage, the top four boxers will advance to the semi-finals. In this stage, the number one ranked boxer will meet the fourth place fighter and the second place boxer will fight the third place boxer in elimination bouts. The two winners will then meet in the final.

The tournament is expected to between 18 and 24 months. The first stage of bouts will take place this fall with Froch facing Dirrell, Taylor meeting Abraham, and Kessler taking on Ward. No official dates and venues have been announced.
