Owen Scores In Man United Debut

Michael Owen’s debut with Manchester United was a success as he scored the winning goal in a 3-2 pre- season victory in Kuala Lumpur on July 17th. Owen came on as a second-half substitute and pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area.

The game was played in front of about 100,000 fans at the Bukit Jalil Stadium. Manchester got off to a great start as Wayne Rooney and Nani scored in the first half to give them a 2-0 lead.

However, the Malaysian squad made it 2-1 just before half time and then leveled the game in the 53rd minute.  Owen banged in the winning goal just three minutes from time after Federico Macheda’s shot was saved.

“It was a typical Michael Owen goal,” stated United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. “He was the first man to react, which is just what you would expect. When you consider the type of player Michael is, he was always going to be looking to score that type of goal.”

Ferguson said that Owen will probably start the rematch in the game on July 20th. Ferguson was also please with Rooney’s performance and realizes with Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez leaving the team that all eyes will now be on his young striker.

”You are seeing maturity from him now, which is what you expect from all young players,” Ferguson stated. ”I don’t believe he needs to look at anything but himself because we know there is a lot of improvement to come from him yet.
