Steven Gerrard Back In Court
England and Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard was back in court on July 20th as jurors waited to be called to try his affray case. The 29-year-old captain of Liverpool appeared with six co-accused defendants at Liverpool Crown Court as Judge Henry Globe QC, the Recorder of Liverpool, adjourned the hearing for legal discussions.
Gerrard got to court early to meet with his solicitor Richard Green to discuss the case. Gerrard, a father-of-two, is accused of affray, a charge which he denies. It has been alleged that Gerrard was involved in a nightclub brawl in Southport, England during the early hours of December 29. A 34-year-old businessman, Marcus McGee, was injured in the melee.
Gerrard was at the club that night celebrating Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Newcastle when the trouble started. He was charged along with Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin, 28, of Southport and midfielder Robert Grant, 18, of Litherland. Also on trial are John Doran, 29, Ian Smith, 19, John McGrattan, 33, and Paul McGrattan, 31, all of Huyton, Merseyside.
The case was adjourned again until July 21st without a jury being sworn in and it is expected to last between two and three weeks.
