Manchester United Hurting
Manchester United will be missing five first-team players for their Champions League tie with CSKA Moscow on Oct. 21 as Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Patrice Evra, Park Ji-sung, and Darren Fletcher didn’t make the trip to Russia.
Rooney has a calf strain which he picked up while playing for England recently in Ukraine and he is trying to get fit in time to face Liverpool in the Premier League on Oct. 25. Giggs and Evra were both injured in Manchester’s 2-1 win over Bolton at Old Trafford on Oct. 17, while Park and Fletcher both missed the Bolton game.
Dimitar Berbatov and Nemanja Vidic both made the trip to Moscow even though they are slightly injured. United has called up Jonny Evans’ 19-year-old younger brother, Corry, for the game against Moscow. Evans can play fullback and midfield, but he hasn’t made his senior debut yet.
United has never beaten a Russian team in five matches in the Champions League, but they did win the 2008 final there by beating Chelsea on penalties.
